What happens at a Smile Zone exam
We start with a tour. New patients get to see the office before anyone touches their teeth. Kids pick which themed area they want to hang out in. We have Safari Hall, Under the Sea, Beach Bay, and Arctic Hall. They meet a few members of The Smile Zone Squad. Sometimes there’s a balloon animal. Sometimes a Disney song.
Then we use Tell, Show, Do. Your dentist tells your child what’s about to happen, shows them the tools (often on a finger first), and then does the thing. No surprises and no grown-up jargon. Most kids are smiling by the end.
A typical visit includes:
- A look at every tooth and the soft tissue around them
- Radiographs (x-rays) when the timing is right for your child
- A gentle cleaning if your child is comfortable
- Fluoride varnish if it’s recommended
- A check on growth, bite, and any habits we want to talk about
- A chat with you about what we saw and what’s next
If your kid is anxious on the first visit, that’s fine. Some kids need two or three visits before they’ll sit in the chair. We don’t rush it.
A dental home for kids and patients with special needs
This part isn’t an afterthought for us. A real share of our patients have sensory, behavioral, or physical needs that other dental offices aren’t set up for. Dr. Heather Hudkins and our team have years of experience adapting visits so they actually work. That might mean a quieter room. A weighted blanket. A pre-visit walkthrough. A familiar parent in the chair. Whatever it takes to make the visit a real visit instead of a missed appointment.
Families come to us from across Springfield, Nixa, Ozark, and Rogersville for this reason alone.
Same-day visits when something goes wrong
If your child wakes up with a toothache, we want to see them today. We try hard to fit same-day appointments in. If you’re already a patient and it’s after hours, our Uh-Oh Line is open 24/7.
