What fluoride varnish is

A sticky resin that we paint on the teeth in about a minute. It hardens on contact and slowly releases fluoride into the enamel for the next few hours. The result is a tooth that’s harder for bacteria to break down.

Why we recommend it

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend fluoride varnish for kids starting at the first tooth, especially for kids at moderate or high cavity risk. Even kids with no history of cavities benefit. Two to four applications a year is typical, depending on risk.

What it's like at the visit

We dry the teeth, paint on the varnish with a small brush, and we’re done. It tastes fruity. Kids barely notice it’s happening.

What to do after

Stick to soft food for a couple of hours. Skip the brushing until the next morning so the varnish has time to do its job. Then back to normal.
