Two kids the same age can have very different cavity risks. Same brushing routine, same parents, totally different mouths. We figure out where your kid lands and build a plan around that.

What goes into the assessment

Smile Zone uses the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Caries Risk Assessment framework. It’s the same approach used by pediatric focused dental practices around the country. We look at:

  • Diet (sippy cups, juice, snacking patterns, sticky candy)
  • Habits (bedtime bottle, thumb sucking, mouth breathing)
  • Existing teeth and any history of fillings or crowns
  • Plaque levels and how the gums are doing Saliva flow
  • Family history (cavities run in families more than people realize)
  • Special needs that affect daily oral care or diet

What we do with the results

Low-risk kids get a streamlined plan. Standard checkups, sealants when the molars come in, brushing coaching as needed. Higher-risk kids get a more proactive plan: more frequent fluoride varnish, sealants on more teeth, a closer look at the diet, and shorter intervals between visits.
The goal isn’t to scare you. The goal is to spend our energy where it’ll actually help your kid.

Why this matters early

Most cavities in kids don’t show up out of nowhere. They’re predictable from a year or two out if you know what to look at. Catching that pattern early means fewer fillings later, less time in the chair, and a kid who associates the dentist with cleanings, not drilling.
