When SDF is a good fit
- Very young kids where a traditional filling would mean sedation
- Kids and patients with special needs who can’t tolerate longer procedures
- Primary teeth that are close to falling out anyway
- High-risk areas where we want to slow decay while planning the next step
The dark stain tradeoff
Here’s the catch. SDF turns the cavity area dark gray or black. That’s the silver doing its job, but it stays. Some parents are fine with this on a back tooth. Some aren’t, especially on front teeth. We talk through the tradeoff with you before we apply anything.
Is SDF AAPD-approved?
AAPD recognizes SDF as a non-restorative caries-arrest treatment. It’s been used safely for years across pediatric focused practices in the U.S. and longer than that internationally.
What SDF is not
SDF stops the decay. It doesn’t fill the hole. If a tooth has structural damage that needs a filling or crown, SDF isn’t a substitute. We’ll be straight about which situation you’re in.
