Kids Tooth Extractions in Springfield, MO

Sometimes a tooth has to come out. We’ve made this part of dentistry as boring as we can. No drama, no surprises, no stories that end up scaring younger siblings.

When extraction is the right call

  • Severe decay past saving, even with pulp therapy
  • Crowding for orthodontic reasons (sometimes a baby tooth has to come out so the adult tooth has room)
  • Stuck baby teeth that won’t budge once the adult tooth is coming in
  • Trauma where the tooth can’t be saved

Dr. Heather will only recommend extraction when nothing else makes sense. We try to save teeth first.

How we do it

Gentle numbing first. Tell, Show, Do every step. Most extractions take a few minutes. A lot of kids are surprised it’s already done.

Sedation if it would help

Most kids do great with behavior management alone. For anxious-but-cooperative kids, nitrous oxide takes the edge off. For very young kids, big cases, or special needs situations where staying still safely isn’t realistic, we offer outpatient general anesthesia.

After the extraction

  • Bite on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Soft food for the rest of the day (think mac and cheese, smoothies in a cup, scrambled eggs)
  • No straws for 24 hours (the suction can dislodge the clot)
  • Tylenol or ibuprofen for soreness if needed
  • Back to normal in a day or two for most kids

What's next

If the missing tooth was a baby tooth lost early, ask us about a space maintainer. We don’t want the gap closing before the adult tooth is ready to come in.
