We try other options first
Behavior management and Tell, Show, Do are always step one. Nitrous is usually step two. General anesthesia is for situations that need it. We won’t push it as the easy answer because it isn’t the easy answer.
How the process works
- Pre-op visit: we plan the treatment and answer your questions
- Day of: hospital or surgical center setting
- A board-certified anesthesiologist runs the sedation and monitors throughout
- Dr. Heather and our team perform the dental work while your child is asleep
- You’re in the building the whole time
- Recovery in the same place under the anesthesia team’s care
Special needs context
A lot of our general anesthesia cases are kids with sensory, behavioral, or physical needs. We see families who’ve been turned away or treated badly somewhere else. Our team has the experience to do this right, and we coordinate closely with the anesthesia team to make every step manageable for the child and the family.
Safety
AAPD has detailed sedation guidelines. We follow them. The anesthesiologist monitors every vital sign throughout the case. Recovery is staffed by people who do this every day.
If general anesthesia is on the table for your child, we want you to feel informed and in control. We’ll spend the time it takes to walk through the plan, the safety measures, and the recovery.
