If your child’s dentist has recommended a crown, it’s normal to have questions. A crown on a baby tooth sounds like a big step, but it’s one of the most common and reliable ways we protect a tooth that has more damage than a filling can fix. Here’s what a stainless steel crown is, when we recommend one, and how it compares to the tooth-colored zirconia option.
What Is a Stainless Steel Crown?
A stainless steel crown is a pre-formed metal cap that fits over an entire baby tooth. Instead of filling a small area of decay, the crown covers the whole tooth from the gumline up, sealing out bacteria and giving the tooth the strength it needs to keep working until it’s ready to fall out on its own.
When Does Your Child Need One?
We typically recommend a crown instead of a filling when:
- The cavity is too large or too deep for a filling to hold up.
- Your child has had pulp therapy (a baby root canal) and the tooth needs extra support afterward.
- A tooth has cracked, broken, or has weak enamel from a developmental condition.
- Your child is at high risk for new cavities and needs a more durable, long-term fix.
- Treating several teeth at once, since a crown holds up better than multiple small fillings and often means less time in the chair.
How They’re Done
We numb the area gently, clean out the decay, and shape the tooth. Then we pick a pre-formed crown in the right size, adjust it for fit, and cement it in place. Most kids handle this in one appointment.
We use Tell, Show, Do at every step, and most kids do great with behavior guidance alone. Nitrous oxide or general anesthesia is available if it would help your child feel more comfortable.
How Long They Last
A stainless steel crown stays in place until the baby tooth falls out naturally. The adult tooth comes in behind it on its normal schedule, and the crown comes out along with the baby tooth.
Stainless Steel vs. Zirconia
Stainless steel is silver and very visible when your child smiles. It’s also the more affordable option.
Zirconia crowns are tooth-colored and blend in with the rest of the smile. They take a little more chair time and cost more than stainless steel. We’ll help you decide based on the tooth’s location, your child’s age, and what matters most to your family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does getting a stainless steel crown hurt?
We numb the area thoroughly before starting, and most children feel pressure at most, not pain. We use Tell, Show, Do to walk your child through each step so they know what to expect.
Will my child need anesthesia?
Most kids do well with behavior guidance alone. For children who are anxious or need multiple teeth treated, nitrous oxide or general anesthesia is available.
What if the crown comes off early?
Give us a call right away. It’s uncommon, but if it happens before the baby tooth is ready to come out, we’ll want to see your child to protect the tooth underneath.
Can we choose zirconia instead of stainless steel?
In many cases, yes. Dr. Hudkins is the only provider in our area placing zirconia crowns on kids, so ask us if it’s a good fit for your child’s tooth.
How do we care for a tooth with a crown?
Brush and floss as usual. The crown is cemented on to protect the tooth, and it needs the same regular home care as the rest of your child’s smile.
