Stainless Steel Crowns for Kids in Springfield, MO

When a tooth has too much decay or damage for a filling, a crown protects what’s left. Stainless steel has been the standard pediatric crown for decades, and there’s a reason it’s still around: it’s tough, predictable, and budget-friendly.

When stainless steel is the right call

  • Back molars where appearance matters less
  • Teeth that need to last several more years before falling out naturally
  • Kids who grind their teeth at night
  • After pulp therapy on a primary tooth
  • Insurance situations where coverage is limited and durability matters most

How they're done

We numb the area gently. Clean out the decay. Shape the tooth. Pick a pre-formed crown in the right size, adjust it for fit, and cement it in place. Most kids handle this in one appointment.

Tell, Show, Do every step. Most kids do great with behavior management alone. Nitrous or general anesthesia is available if it would help.

How long they last

Until the baby tooth falls out naturally. The adult tooth comes in behind it on schedule. The crown comes out with the baby tooth.

Stainless steel vs. zirconia

Stainless steel is silver and very visible when your kid smiles. Zirconia is tooth-colored and blends with the rest of the smile. Stainless steel costs less. Zirconia takes a little more chair time and costs more. We help you decide based on the tooth’s location, your child’s age, and what matters most to your family.

Heads up: Dr. Heather Hudkins is the only provider in our area placing zirconia crowns on kids. If you want zirconia and you’ve been told it’s not available, give us a call.
